What Is Taekwondo?

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art that draws its inspiration from ancient Chinese, Japanese, and Korean traditions and fighting styles. Since its creation following WWII, it has grown to become one of the most popular martial arts in the world.

Other than its strong emphasis on agility, there are many tenets Taekwondo aims to instill in its athletes. These tenets include honor, humility, perseverance, respect, loyalty, strength, self-discipline, good citizenship, and self-discipline.

As you progress, you have opportunities to move up in rank. This ranking system is based on colored belts starting with white and working towards black and then degrees of black. Each advancing belt provides challenges of increasing difficulty and functions as a symbol of the techniques and skills you have mastered.

Our Sugar Land dojo offers 4 Taekwondo programs that are divided by age group.

Kids aged 4-6 can enroll in our Tiger-Cubs Program. This program offers 30 minute classes focused on symmetrical movement, balance, and coordination.

Older kids aged 6-10 can enroll in our Junior Program. These classes are 40-45 minutes each and focus on building your child’s self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-control. This is done through agility drills and sparring drills that teach them real-world self-defense.

Younger teens can enroll in our Youth Program. These classes are also 40-45 minutes long, and they are aimed at teens between the ages of 11 and 15. These classes focus on building strong character, fostering leadership skills, and encouraging responsible citizenship through agility drills and sparring drills.

Anyone ages 16 and older can enroll in one or more of our Adult Martial Arts Training Programs. These programs include Kickboxing, Self-Defense, and, of course, Taekwondo. The goals of these adult classes are to build your physical strength and to boost your self-confidence.

Equipment And Drills

As you participate in our Taekwondo classes, you will use a variety of equipment. This will likely include target paddles, padded shields, and punching bags. Later you may also have the option to use plastic or wooden boards.

You will have opportunities to practice with live partners, and you will eventually have opportunities to spar!

You will wear protective gear like feet guards and gloves while sparring.

Sparring drills are a type of practical application. During these drills, you will wear protective gear and compete with a live opponent to score points by landing different strikes or blows to different areas of their body.

Sparring gear includes elbow and knee pads; feet, shin, and forearm guards; padded gloves; headgear; and a mouthguard. It can also include a clear face mask if desired. This gear protects both you and your opponent from injury.

Other drills will be more repetitive. These can include striking drills on a punching bag, shield, or target paddle or moving across the room, performing the same motion in quick succession. Another type of repetitive drill is called a form.

A form is a pre-determined series of moments used to simulate a fight with one or more opponents. The main purpose of a form is to encourage powerful movements that flow from one to the other as each is performed in succession.

Some Things You Might Learn

You will start by learning foundations you can build upon. For example, one of the first things you will learn is how to make a safe and effective fist. This fist will then be used to learn to form safe and effective blocks and other, more difficult strikes such as a hammer fist.

Kicks will also increase in difficulty as you progress. For example, you will start by learning basic front kicks, sidekicks, and a few others. Later you will learn jumping kicks, spinning kicks, and impressive combinations of the two.

You may also learn how to identify weak points on the body and how to use stronger points on your own body to defend yourself if necessary. For example, you may learn to use a stronger point on your body like your elbow against a weaker point on an attacker’s body like their nose, throat, or solar plexus. If you want to focus more on defense strategies than general skills, we recommend considering looking into our self-defense specific classes as well.

Taekwondo vs Karate

Because these two martial arts are at least partially inspired by ancient Japanese traditions and fighting styles, they have many similarities. However, there are two key differences.

Firstly, while sparring Taekwondo athletes make contact with every strike and block. Karate athletes, on the other hand, often do not make contact with their opponent.

Karate is Japanese for empty hand.

The second key difference comes from the word Karate itself.

Karate is a Japanese word meaning empty hand. This refers to two elements of Karate that differ greatly from the practices of Taekwondo.

The first of these is the emphasis on open-handed techniques like the world-famous karate chop. Taekwondo focuses more on strikes involving closed hands or one’s legs.

The second of these empty hand differences is the lack of weapons used in Karate.

It is uncommon for athletes who practice Karate to learn a weapon, but it is fairly common for those who practice Taekwondo to learn one or more weapons. These weapons commonly include swords like katanas, bo staffs, fans, and kamas.
