The modern form of taekwondo originates from the 1950s.

The Origins of Taekwondo

Taekwondo boomed in the 1950s when a group of master instructors introduced it to the Americas. However, the roots of what we know as taekwondo today reach back several centuries. The martial art started to bud when the Korean peninsula was divided into three kingdoms. The weakest of the three, Silla, formed a group of warriors. The warriors were trained with weapons and without. Hand-to-hand combat primarily focused on foot technique and was known as HwaRang.

The king of Silla believed his warriors needed mental training as well. So, he turned to a Buddhist monk to train the warriors. The monk developed a code of ethics for the warriors to follow. Silla took over the other two kingdoms and united Korea. As time went on, the martial art grew in popularity and was mixed with others. Finally, in the 1950s, taekwondo was finalized and spread across the globe.
