The Origin and Meaning of Taekwondo

Traditional Taekwondo, also known as “Korean Karate,” is a Korean martial art curated over thousands of years ago. The purpose of this practice is to develop the entire person. Therefore, students do not only improve the body but also must focus on the mind and spirit, along with learning self-defense skills. The practice of this martial art develops strong character through its five primary principles which are:

  • Courtesy
  • Integrity
  • Perseverance
  • Self-discipline
  • Indomitable Spirit

The breakdown of the word is as follows:

Tae: Which stands for the “foot” or “to kick” or “jump.”

Kwon: Symbolizes the “fist” or “to strike or block with the hand.”

Do: Means “the way of” or “art.”

Additionally, when one puts this all together, it can translate to “the art of kicking and punching” or, for technical terms, “the art of unarmed combat.”

Types of Martial Arts

Karate

This covers many styles of self-defense involving self-defense incorporating kicks, punches, and open-handed chops. The word karate was first used in Okinawa, Japan. This was created by a martial artist that had Chinese influences. “Kara” originally referred to as China and “karate” to Chinese hand, but Japanese translates this to “empty hand.”

Judo

This martial art also derived from Japan. Like jiu-jitsu and aikido, it depends heavily on grappling. With Judo, though, there is more of a focus on throws and pinning the opponent on the ground.

Kung fu

This Chinese martial art uses several fighting styles, some involving acrobatic elements such as flips, jumps, and high kicks. Kung Fu can be loosely split into two schools. Therefore, one can be focused on arm work, rapid close-range punching, and those that focus on acrobatics, with leg work and kicks.

Capoeria

This Brazilian martial art was initially curated by Angolan slaves who disguised their self-defense as performance arts. It is very acrobatic, accompanied with flips, punches, and kicks.

Benefits of Taekwondo

Below you will find some of the many benefits of martial arts:

  1. Enhances Mental Health. Taekwondo requires mental discipline in that it is centered on learning the forms, reaction time, processing, and hand-eye coordination.
  2. Builds Character. Taekwondo promotes character building to acquire excellent qualities such as cooperation, loyalty, integrity, perseverance, self-control, gratitude, and much more.
  3. Builds Body. Kicking, punching, blocking, and stretching helps build up the body and enhances stamina.
  4. Self-esteem Boost. Also, practicing Taekwondo alone can encourage students to take control of their life. As students grow in the program, their confidence will soar.
  5. Stress Relief. Both children and adults can endure stress alike. This practice allows students to release anger, anxiety, and stress they may be experiencing daily.
  6. Leadership Skills. Individuals are tested on leadership skills such as honor, courtesy, integrity, courage, humility, strength, and knowledge.
  7. Coping with defeat. Learning how to learn from your failures instead of being upset can help you go a long way. Life is not about a series of wins. Taekwondo can help cope with denial, loss, and not being accepted. Additionally, in this practice, students will learn the importance of losing with grace and how to congratulate opponents.
  8. Socialization Skills. Sparring and other elements of Taekwondo require that students interact with their peers as well as adult instructors.
  9. Goal Setting Skills. As students progress in rank and belt color, setting particular goals that motivate and inspire them is a part of the program. Additionally, at each level, students set goals that significant to them.
  10. Practicing Teamwork. Although martial arts is an individual sport, there are many opportunities for children to learn the importance of teamwork. These teamwork driven activities include sparring, board breaking, testing, demonstration performances, and even at tournaments.
