The Origin and Meaning of Taekwondo
Traditional Taekwondo, also known as “Korean Karate,” is a Korean martial art curated over thousands of years ago. The purpose of this practice is to develop the entire person. Therefore, students do not only improve the body but also must focus on the mind and spirit, along with learning self-defense skills. The practice of this martial art develops strong character through its five primary principles which are:

The breakdown of the word is as follows:
Tae: Which stands for the “foot” or “to kick” or “jump.”
Kwon: Symbolizes the “fist” or “to strike or block with the hand.”
Do: Means “the way of” or “art.”
Additionally, when one puts this all together, it can translate to “the art of kicking and punching” or, for technical terms, “the art of unarmed combat.”
Types of Martial Arts
This covers many styles of self-defense involving self-defense incorporating kicks, punches, and open-handed chops. The word karate was first used in Okinawa, Japan. This was created by a martial artist that had Chinese influences. “Kara” originally referred to as China and “karate” to Chinese hand, but Japanese translates this to “empty hand.”
