History of Taekwondo

Here at Tiger-Rock martial arts, we specialize in a more progressive form of Taekwondo known to us as Ho-Am. In Korean, Ho means “tiger,” and Am means “rock.” This name symbolizes the spirit, values, and vision of Tiger‐Rock Martial Arts. The Tiger symbolizes justice and bravery, and the Rock symbolizes the steadfast and immovable life spirit of the Korean and Western civilizations. The martial art itself originates from the Korean peninsula and has been practiced and honed for over two millennia.

In Korean, Taekwondo is derived from the words Tae, meaning “foot,” Kwon, meaning “fist,” and Do, meaning “way.” Altogether, the literal translation is “the way of the foot and fist.” During the 6th century, today’s Korea was split into three separate kingdoms that all engaged in constant conflict with one another.

Silla, the smallest and weakest of the three communities, lost a lot of land to the other kingdoms. So, the 24th King had them learn fighting techniques with weapons and while unarmed. With the help of Buddhist monks, they were able to combine these fighting techniques with a code of ethics that helped form the tenets of Taekwondo as we know it today.

Taekwondo Today

Over the next thousand years, numerous modifications were made to the fighting style. This lead to a splintering of the martial art, varying in different regions and areas of the country. Many schools began to spread throughout Korea, and it wasn’t until the 20th century that these academies decided to come together to unify the art. The name Taekwondo is what they referred to as the unified art form.

Taekwondo first came to the US back during the 1950s when instructors from Korea came over and began teaching the art. For several decades, Taekwondo grew in popularity and is now even a medal-earning sport in the Olympics. Compared to most other martial art forms, Taekwondo is widely considered to be the most practiced form in the world.

Benefits of Taekwondo

Like all martial art forms, Taekwondo is a very physically demanding activity. With that being said, the by-product of getting into a more pristine shape is almost always guaranteed. Through our meticulously planned workouts, we promise to help you improve your strength, flexibility, and even your physical endurance.

Aside from the physical advantages that our Taekwondo classes can provide, another benefit to consider is the sharpening of your mind and focus. Most of our drills revolve around repetition and structure. This is purposefully done to ensure you not only learn all of the various techniques quickly but to also improve your reaction time as well.
