Taekwondo VS Karate

Taekwondo was developed in Korea in the years following WWII. It draws from the traditions, values, and fighting styles of ancient China, Korea, and Japan. On the other hand, Karate was developed in Okinawa, Japan, and draws solely on the traditions, values, and fighting styles found in Japan.

Both of these martial arts emphasize agility and tenets, including respect, perseverance, honor, humility, loyalty, strength, self-discipline, good citizenship, and self-discipline. Also similar are the dojos, uniforms, form drills, and sparring drills. Despite so many similarities, the two are incredibly different. The first two significant differences come from Karate’s word, which translates from Japanese to mean empty hand.

Firstly, Karate martial artists typically fight empty-handed or without weapons. However, taekwondo martial artists usually learn one or more weapons such as a bo staff, fans, kamas, or a sword like a katana. Secondly, there is a focus on open-handed techniques. This is heavily represented in the media through the very famous karate chop. This contrasts with Taekwondo’s emphasis on powerful kicks.

Many other critical differences between Taekwondo and Karate can be found in the practice of sparring, known in Japanese as Kumite.

Sparring and Its Point System

As you learn new techniques, you will use various equipment, including target paddles, padded shields, standing punching bags, and both plastic and wooden boards. You will also have several opportunities to practice your techniques with live opponents. Taekwondo and Karate athletes both wear protective sparring gear. When two students dawn protective gear and apply their learned skills to earn points, the match is referred to as sparring.

For example, these 2-minute matches can be stopped early if one opponent gains a large point spread over the other. In Karate, this need only be 7 points, but it must be 12 points in Taekwondo. Secondly, the legal target areas differ between these martial arts. For example, the entire head and face is a standard zone when sparring in Karate, but the front and back of the head are off-limits when sparring in Taekwondo.

However, the most significant difference between the two when it comes to sparring is the concept of controlled contact in Karate. Martial artists who practice Karate pull back and do not strike their opponent with full blows while competing. Hitting your opponent too hard can result in a penalty in Karate.

Karate Benefits

There are many benefits to regularly practicing a martial art like Karate or Kickboxing. One major benefit is reduced stress and anxiety. Other benefits often include improved:

  1. Balance
  2. Cardiovascular Health
  3. Coordination
  4. Discipline
  5. Flexibility
  6. Physical Strength and Stamina
  7. Self-Confidence
  8. Self-Esteem

Kickboxing

You will use a variety of equipment in our kickboxing classes. If you are looking for a high-intensity full-body workout or a way to practice your strikes outside of classes, check out our Kickboxing classes! Kickboxing is a form of mixed martial arts drawing from Karate, Taekwondo, Krav Maga, Muay Thai, and many other martial arts. What makes it unique from other martial arts? When kickboxing, the only good points of contact are your hands and feet.

Kickboxing classes are known for burning mass amounts of calories through high-intensity interval training style cardio workouts. These workouts are a great way to practice and add power to the skills and techniques you learn in your Karate classes! Increase your strength, stamina, and speed by taking our Kickboxing classes today!

Here at Tiger-Rock you can learn how to defend yourself!

What Will You Learn?

All of our classes will teach you essential, real-world self-defense skills. These skills will build upon each other as you increase in rank, strength, and agility. For example, one of the first things you will learn is how to form a safe and effective fist. You will then use this technique as you know basic punches and blocks. Later, you will also use this technique while learning more advanced strikes such as hook punches, uppercuts, and hammer fists.

The same goes for kicking techniques. You will likely begin by learning how to form various simple kicks, including front and sidekicks. Then you will learn how to put the elements together and add power to them. And later, you will learn how to add more challenging features such as jumps and spins that both add power and points to your techniques.

As you master various skills, you will also use more advanced equipment. One way to measure your progress is to break boards of increasing difficulty or thickness.
