What Is Taekwondo 75072?
Taekwondo is a Korean martial art that draws from ancient Chinese, Korean, and Japanese traditions, fighting techniques, and values.
Like the Japanese martial art of Karate, Taekwondo hopes to build agility, strength, and self-discipline while instilling tenets such as respect, perseverance, honor, humility, and loyalty in its athletes.
Despite these similarities and similar dojos, uniforms, and drills, these martial arts are very different. For example, unlike Karate, Taekwondo places a particular focus on powerful kicks.
The word Karate is Japanese for empty hand.
Key Differences
Karate is a Japanese word meaning empty hand. This term refers to the lack of weapons used and the emphasis on open-handed striking and blocking techniques.
Kata, or forms in English, refers to the pre-determined set of movements an athlete learns. Katas encourage athletes to flow between the individual techniques used. This helps prepare students for sparring drills.
Kumite, or sparring in English, is the practical application of these skill sets against a live opponent. These 2-minute matches are intense and fast-paced! Each student dons protective gear, including knee and elbow pads, gloves, headgear, and guards for their feet, shins, and forearms. Every student must wear a mouthguard, but transparent face masks are sometimes optional.
When practicing either martial art, you will advance in rank through a system of colored belts, use similar equipment, learn katas, and apply the techniques you learn through fast-paced sparring drills. Despite these significant similarities, there are many essential differences between the two martial arts. Many of these fundamental differences are found in sparring.
Sparring For Sport
There are many differences in the practice of sparring between these two seemingly similar martial arts. One difference is in the point spread rule. The purpose of this rule is to end sparring matches early if one opponent quickly takes a large lead over their opponent. In Karate, a 7 point spread or information is needed to complete a game before. Taekwondo sparring rules require a 12 point spread.
Karate and Taekwondo 75072 students wear protective gear while sparring.
A second significant difference between the two is the list of legal target area you can strike while sparring. When sparring in Karate, the entire head and face are considered traditional target areas. In Taekwondo, however, the front and the back of the head are off-limits. Striking either can earn you a penalty.
And finally, the most significant difference between the two practices is the Japanese concept of controlled contact. When Karate athletes spar, they pull their strikes to firmly press into their opponent rather than deliver a full blow. Delivering too hard of an impact can result in a penalty.
Benefits of Karate
There are many physical and emotional benefits to regularly participating in Karate classes. Some of these benefits include improved:
- Balance
- Cardiovascular Health
- Coordination
- Discipline
- Flexibility
- Physical Strength and Stamina
- Self-Confidence
- Self-Esteem
Martial Arts Workout – Kickboxing
If you are interested in trying out martial arts for the potential high-intensity workout, you should consider enrolling in our Kickboxing classes! These classes are major cardio workouts that focus on high-intensity interval training, core strength, and stamina.
What is Kickboxing? Kickboxing is a form of MMA or mixed martial arts. This means that it draws inspiration from the techniques and traditions of several martial arts. Some of Kickboxing’s martial arts draws from including Karate, Taekwondo, Muay Thai, and Krav Maga.
The unique factor Kickboxing has that separates it from many other martial arts is that there are only two allowed points of contact – the hands and feet.
Lessons Learned
All of our Karate and Kickboxing classes are taught by local self-defense experts. These experienced instructors will teach you real-world self-defense skills alongside striking and blocking techniques. You will learn everything you need to defend yourself confidently.
Many of the skills you learn will build upon each other to take on more demanding techniques as you advance in skill and rank. For example, at a beginner level, you will learn how to form a safe and effective fist. You will then learn how to apply this fist to increasingly difficult strikes and blocks.
The same is accurate with kicks. First, you must learn how to form and use safe and effective kicking methods. Only then can you safely add power behind the techniques as you practice. After mastering these powerful techniques, you will learn to add even more control using jumps and spins! These impressive kicking techniques can earn you extra points in sparring matches, especially when striking at head level.
