The Origins of Taekwondo
Taekwondo has been established for several years. The name of the martial art dates back to 1955. A group of instructors and historians gathered to name the martial art that was so beloved and growing in popularity. The group created the name Taekwondo from three different Korean words: Tae, Kwon, and Do.
Tae means “foot,” Kwon means “fist,” and Do means “way.” Thus, Taekwondo means the way of using your foot and fist. Even though the name of the martial art is only just over 50 years old, Taekwondo has roots all the way back to the 6th century. At the time, the Korean Peninsula was split into three kingdoms: Koguryo, Baekje, and Silla.
Koguryo was the largest of the three kingdoms, while Silla was the smallest and weakest. Silla had lost a lot of land to the Kogruyo and Baekje kingdoms.
So, the 24th king of Silla created a group of warriors known as the HwaRang. The group of warriors was trained in a variety of different weapons, such as swords and bows. However, the highlight of their training was unarmed combat.
Once the warriors perfected the unarmed combat, the king believed his warriors needed more than just combat training. He turned to a scholar and monk to train the warriors mentally. The man developed five ethical codes for warriors to follow. The soldiers were to follow the codes throughout their life and during battle.
After having learned the combat techniques and following the ethics put forth, Silla began to reclaim the plant it had lost. Eventually, Silla took over the other two kingdoms and united the Korean Peninsula underneath one king.
