Tiger-Rock Martial Arts is offering Mason Park Karate near me. We have been teaching students the art of Karate for over 20 years. In fact, our chief instructors, Master Reade and Master Pollard, each have over 30 years of experience under their black belts. Tiger-Rock instructors are excited to pass down their expertise in the disciplines of TaeKwonDo and Karate.
About TaeKwonDo
TaeKwonDo is Korean for “The Way (Do) of the Foot (Tae) and the Fist (Kwon).” Originating from the aftermath of World War II, it is relatively new. When the Japanese occupation of Korea ended, old dojos were able to practice in the open again. The Way came about as a mixture of new students practicing these, mainly the Chinese and Korean forms of Taekkyon, Subak, Gwonbeop, and the Okinawan Karate. TaeKwonDo emphasizes strikes, head-height kicks, spin kicks, and side kicks.
The Way is not just a martial art. It is also a sport. Ever since 2000, it has been a part of the Summer Olympics roster. Plus, the governing bodies of the World TaeKwonDo Federation and the International TaeKwon-Do Federation hold major tournaments worldwide. Tiger-Rock hosts competitions as well, regional, state, and national, in the Fall, Summer, and Spring.
About Karate
Karate is a more ancient martial art. Its roots take place in the Ryukyu Kingdom, in current-day Japan, on the Okinawa Islands. Karate’s primary influence is the Fujian White Crane style of Kung Fu. Karate emphasizes open-handed strikes, such as knife-hands, punching, kicking, and elbow and knee strikes.
After Okinawa’s annexation to Japan, Karate slowly entered universities. It spread to the mainland’s schools as well. In the 20s, Japan taught Karate systematically and nationally. During the US occupation, servicemen got into Karate themselves. The movies of the 60s and 70s practically made the word synonymous with martial arts in general. Eventually, Karate schools were opening up across the globe, and, now, we have Tiger-Rock’s Mason Park Karate near me.
Kids and Teen Classes
We have students of all ages take classes at Tiger-Rock. And we designed our lessons specifically for each one.
Kids ages 4 to 6 enroll in our Cub Program. Tiger Cubs learn balance, coordination, and symmetrical movements. In our lessons, they receive opportunity to practice social skills and learn how to treat others with respect. Also, Karate is an excellent avenue for a lot of positive energy. Tiger-Rock’s Karate lesson will be some of the most fun they have all week.
We have our Junior Program for those from ages 6 to 10. No one needs to be told that this is probably the best age to be in TaeKwonDo. Not only is a kid most interested in martial arts, but now they can start learning more complex techniques. Additionally, students receive our anti-bullying education. In Junior lessons, we practice stances, forms, speed and agility drills, kicking, striking, and sparring.
Tiger-Rock Martial Arts’ Mason Park Karate near me makes an excellent after-school extra-curricular. Our Teen Classes, for students 11 to 15, teaches leadership, good citizenship, cooperation, and discipline. These traits are important to have in one’s character and take with you for the rest of your life.
Adult Classes
Those that are 16 years old and older should sign up for our Adult TaeKwonDo Classes. Through the rigorous training you experience with us, you can accomplish whatever your goals are. Whether it is to work your way up the ranks to black belt, compete in tournaments, or keep yourself in top physical form, we are here for you.
The Many Benefits of Karate
Karate strengthens all aspects of the person. Some of the benefits will be as obvious and direct as getting stronger. Meanwhile, others will be surprising, like a sharper focus and better concentration. Or, maybe the increased self-discipline might come to you as a happy side effect. However, any martial arts’ primary aim is to build character.
Character
We train under five fundamental tenets here at Tiger-Rock Martial Arts: humility, honor, loyalty, perseverance, and respect. Our goal is that every student walks out of our school’s doors exemplifying these in the world. Along with the discipline and work it takes, TaeKwonDo requires these traits.
But, for us, the most important trait for us to pass down is a greater sense of integrity. We define integrity as doing the right thing even when no one is watching. You cannot get anywhere with Karate without it. You hold yourself accountable for the work you put in and must be honest with yourself. There is no cheating to get to the results you want.
One more way of finding people with integrity in TaeKwonDo is to remember it is a technique of self-defense. The Way is not a means of violence. Instead, it controls and subdues aggression through self-restraint in both an attacker and one’s self. TaeKwonDo and Karate asks us to act in upright and moral ways.
Fitness
Karate works and helps us build all our aspects of physical fitness. Our stretching and high kicks work our flexibility, and warm-ups strengthen our cardio. Conditioning and core training build muscular strength and endurance. The repetitive practice of kicking and striking drills provides coordination and muscle memory. Karate offers a full-body workout.
As of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Karate joins the pantheon of participation sports. And, for decades, the World Karate Foundation has overseen major tournaments across the globe. Our classes make a great way to prepare for your place in a competition. Karate offers excellent opportunities for cooperation, camaraderie, and competition in-class as well, with sparring and setting up one another’s drills.
