About Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Tiger-Rock Martial Arts of The Woodlands

Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a martial art, combat sport, and self-defense system with a focus on ground fighting and submission holds. It’s evolution has been substantial since its beginnings over a century ago by the Gracie family in Brazil.  Today, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu enjoys a great deal of mainstream popularity thanks to MMA promotions such as the UFC.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu, or “BJJ” for short, has a simple concept: you can overcome an opponent by using proper technique and leverage with takedowns and ground fighting.

Black Belt Instructor Matthew Hartman serves as the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class instructor in The Woodlands at Tiger-Rock Martial Arts—FM 1488. The program is administered by Gracie Humaitá Conroe.

Like our core taekwondo program, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes from Tiger Rock in Woodlands offers numerous benefits such as improvement in physical health and strong character building.

Our classes

Brazilian jiu-jitsu classes focuses on helping you improve your ground fighting and submission techniques. For younger students, we include life skills lessons such as bullying prevention and stranger awareness.

Ground fighting Unlike most Japanese and Korean martial arts systems, BJJ is known for its greater emphasis on ground fighting over striking. In fact, a lot of our lessons are geared towards helping trainees sharpen their ground fighting skills. While it is one thing to take an opponent to the ground, it is really about knowing what to do when you go to the ground.

We’ll teach you how to use leverage to defeat your opponent on the ground. Positions include side control, mount, back grab, closed guard, open guard, and half guard. By properly applying these positions, you will be able to overpower your opponent.

Submission Submissions are generally divided into two categories: joint locks and choke holds. Over the course of your jiu-jitsu training, you will learn how to apply various submission techniques in each of these categories. The goal is always to get your opponent to submit.
