These classes offer a safe and encouraging place to continue working on the skills learned during self-defense classes while gaining new techniques using that skill set. They also offer a good stepping stone towards the Taekwondo classes we offer.
Kickboxing is a form of mixed martial arts. This means it draws on the traditions, rules, and techniques of many different martial arts. Two that it draws from are taught here at Tiger-Rock – Taekwondo and Karate. It also draws from other martial arts, including Muay Thai, Jiu-Jitsu, and Krav Maga.

If you enjoy our Missouri City TX self defense classes, consider trying our Kickboxing classes!
The key difference between Kickboxing and its inspirations is that the only points of contact allowed are the hands and feet. Many of the forms that inspired allow the use of knees, elbows, shins, and other body parts when striking an opponent.
Kickboxing is typically used as a cardio or high-intensity interval training workout, but it is so much more than that. This intense workout can help improve your strength and self-confidence while preparing you to neutralize any threats of harm that may come your way.
Taekwondo
The Korean martial art of Taekwondo borrows from ancient Korean, Chinese, and Japanese traditions, values, and fighting styles. Its emphasis is on agility. This is mostly attained by practicing kicking, striking, blocking, and speed drills.
As you advance in rank, you will learn harder techniques that will likely include head-height, jumping, or spinning kicks. You will also have opportunities to move away from soft practice targets to test your skills against plastic or wooden boards.
Other physical goals as you train will include flexibility, speed, and stamina.
Besides agility, Taekwondo has many valuable tenets, including honor, humility, perseverance, respect, loyalty, good citizenship, and self-discipline.
Is It Different From Karate?
Taekwondo and Karate have many similarities, but there are two very important distinctions.

Karate translates from Japanese to mean “empty hand.”
Firstly, both often utilize the practice of sparring. Sparring is the practical application of techniques against a live opponent.
Martial artists who practice Taekwondo will make contact while striking, kicking, and blocking during sparring matches. Martial artists who practice most forms of Karate, however, will not.
The second difference lies in the name of Karate itself. It translates from Japanese to mean “empty hand.”
Most martial artists who practice Karate methods do not use weapons while it is common for those who practice Taekwondo to learn to use one or more. Common weapons include Bo staff, fan, kama, and katanas or other swords.
