What Is Taekwondo?
Taekwondo is a Korean martial art that was founded in the years following WWII. It draws inspiration from the values, traditions, and fighting styles of ancient Japan, China, and Korea. Since its creation, it has become one of the most popular martial arts in the world!
Taekwondo places a large emphasis on agility and aims to instill several tenets in its athletes, including honor, humility, perseverance, respect, loyalty, strength, self-discipline, good citizenship, and self-discipline.
Progression is shown through a hierarchy of colored belts. You begin as a white belt and advance through several colors with the goal of reaching black.
Taekwondo differs from many other martial arts focusing on powerful strikes, particularly those involving one’s legs.
How Is It Different From Karate?
Karate is another very popular martial art that draws from Japanese traditions and fighting styles. Despite many similarities, including the use of a dojo, similar uniforms, and pre-determined technical sets of movements known as forms or katas, the two martial arts have two very important differences.
The first difference involves sparring drills. Sparring is a form of the practical application of techniques against a live opponent.
When Taekwondo athletes spar, every strike and block makes physical contact. However, many Karate athletes do not make contact, especially when competing.

Karate is Japanese for empty hand.
Points are earned in both sparring types, but the point-earning process looks very different between the two because of the lack of contact.
The second key difference comes from the word Karate itself. The Japanese word, Karate, translates to English to mean empty hand. This refers to two defining features of Karate – the emphasis on open-hand techniques and the lack of weapons used.
Taekwondo athletes often learn one or more of these common weapons: swords like katanas, bo staffs, fans, and kamas.

The Taekwondo School At Tiger-Rock Martial Arts’ Sugar Land dojo offers 4 different programs divided by the age of those enrolled.
Tiger-Cubs are 4-6. Kids enrolled in this program participate in 30-minute classes focusing on symmetrical movement, balance, and coordination.
Junior Program is for kids aged 6-10. These classes jump to 45 minutes and focus on agility drills and sparring drills that teach real-world self-defense. Other focuses of this program are increasing self-control and self-confidence.
The youth program is for teens aged 11-15. These classes are also 45 minutes long. The focus of this program is on building strong character and leadership skills while encouraging responsible citizenship. This is mostly done through agility and sparring drills.
Anyone 16 and older can enroll in our adult Taekwondo classes. These aim to build your physical strength and boost your self-confidence. Adults can also participate in our Kickboxing or Self-Defense specific classes.
Equipment And Drills

Taekwondo 77459 classes use a variety of equipment, including target paddles.
Participation in our Taekwondo classes at any level will likely involve the use of various types of equipment. This equipment will range from target paddles and padded shields to standing punching bags to even plastic or wooden boards.
You will have opportunities to use a variety of this equipment and practice with live partners and get feedback from local experts with years of experience.
One way you may practice with live partners is through previously mentioned sparring drills. Another way to practice with a live partner is to hold targets for one another as you learn or practice different strikes.
Some drills will be completed without a partner or even a target. Some will involve performing a motion in quick succession as you cross a certain distance of mat-covered floor.
Things You Might Learn
As you progress and move up in belt rank, you will learn progressively harder and more demanding techniques. For example, a white belt may learn a simple front kick, while a higher belt may learn a jumping sidekick. This is because many techniques build upon themselves.
For example, one of the first things you will learn is how to form a safe and effective fist. Next, you will learn a simple forward punch. Then you will learn punches that are thrown in different directions, like an uppercut or hook.
And finally, you will learn more demanding techniques, including a hammer fist. You will learn all of these techniques and more using what you learned from making a simple fist!
The same goes for kicks and the effective usage of different strikes. Kicks will become more demanding as you begin to add spins and jumps to them. And your strikes will become more effective as you learn about the strong points on your body and how they can pair with weaker points on the body of your opponent.
For example, your elbow is one of the strongest points on your body, while the nose, throat, solar plexus, and groin are all weaker points you could elbow if you were attacked from behind.

Regular participation in Taekwondo classes offers many health benefits, including improved flexibility, balance, coordination, strength, and stamina. Another great benefit is the improvement of stress and anxiety levels.
