The History of Taekwondo
The term Taekwondo is often split into three words: Tae, Kwon, and Do. These three words originate from Korea, where the words were put together to name the martial art.
Tae means “foot,” Kwan means “fist,” and Do means “way.” The name Taekwondo did not appear until 1955 when a collective of historians and instructors determined a name.
Even though the name for martial art was established recently, the art can be traced back to the 6th century. At the time, the Korean peninsula was divided into three kingdoms: Koguryo, Paekje, and Silla.
Silla was the weakest of the three kingdoms. It had been losing land to the others for years. Eventually, the 24th king of Silla formed a group of warriors called HwaRang.
The HwaRang were a group of warriors taught in a variety of weapons and hand to hand combat. More specifically, they were taught to fight weaponless and use their feet more often than their hands. Taekwondo is the only martial art to focus on foot techniques, which makes it unique among others.
The king of Silla believed proper training was not the only necessity to combat. With that said, he looked to a monk and scholar to help his warriors.
The monk established a list of ethics the warriors needed to follow. With the ethics and the focus on weaponless combat, Silla had a fighting chance against the other kingdoms.
Eventually, Silla started to take back the land it had lost. In time, Silla defeated the other two kingdoms and united the entire peninsula of Korea. As you can see, the roots of Taekwondo are rich in history. Tiger-Rock Martial Arts is dedicated to continuing that rich history through a number of programs.
